New York Video Walking Tours actually began when I became a full time New York resident in April of 2011. I had grown up in Pittsburgh, PA and lived in several parts of the country – West Palm Beach, Minneapolis, and San Antonio – before moving to the Upper East Side of Manhattan.
As my Facebook friends found out about my relocation, many started asking me to take pictures of the City and post them on Facebook. The more I posted, the more my friends asked to see. Before long, I bought a small video camera and a microphone so I could comment on some of the sights and scenes of my new home as I took frequent walks around “The Big Apple” in the summer of 2011.
This website is the result of many of those meandering strolls around Manhattan Island.
This website is not intended to compete with the commercial websites of bona fide travel agencies and tour companies. It is just one person’s joyful attempt to get to know one of the greatest cities in the world, and to share what he has learned with anyone who wants to do the same.
I’m fortunate because I have a live-in tour guide – my new wife Wendy has lived in Manhattan her entire adult life. She has provided much of the information and many of the insights that are included in the narrated videos in these web pages.
I should stress that I’m not a professional photographer, and all video and pictures have been shot on a small handheld (and inexpensive) video camera. As I walk around the City, I don’t carry a tripod with me, so some of the video is unsteady at times (especially on windy days). I hope you’ll make allowances.
I should also mention that you could live in New York for years and not be able to experience everything the five boroughs have to offer. Nor could you possibly visit every museum, landmark, park or restaurant (there are more than 10,000 restaurants in New York). But I’ll try to do informal walking tours of as many interesting places as I can. It will, though, be impossible to go to them all.
I sincerely hope you enjoy watching the videos and looking at the pictures on this website. I’m including a blog about life in New York City for anyone who is interested. I still see the city more like a visitor than a resident, and so many of my observations may resonate with those who find their way here through the search engines.
With the help of a number of helping travel providers and merchants, I’ve also included a small shopping section especially for those who may be planning a visit to New York City in the near future.
I hope you enjoy browsing New York Video Walking Tours as much as I’ve enjoyed putting it together for you.
